Our Mountains

Jarek Pieniak runs a blog: zespoldowna.info, where he presents scientific considerations and concepts regarding the support of people with Down syndrome and the autism spectrum disorder. Jarek’s passion is conquering peaks – literally mountain difficult trails. On the journey he takes his wife and two sons – Janek (13) with Down syndrome and Kamil (25) – autistic. They have climbed several times the Diadem of the Polish Mountains, hundreds of peaks and European routes inaccessible to the average mountain rover. For years, Jarek has been inspiring parents of children with Down syndrome and autism to act against stereotypes and limitations.

In the film, we accompany the Pieniak family’s expedition to Mount Śnieżnik – the highest border peak on the Polish side in the Eastern Sudetes, which they call a “warm-up” before real challenges.

Intellectual disability is a topic that can be easily ignored if approached too sloppy, sentimentally. Jarek in an honest interview leaves no doubt that behind the realization of your dreams is extraordinary effort and determination: “If you have a dream, a goal – you will achieve it, even if no one believes that you will succeed.”

By watching this film, you support the initiative to show the world of intellectual disability in a broader perspective and in a stronger light. We thank you for that.
